What the specs mean in practice
Detector resolution. 384×288 gives 110,592 thermal pixels, about 2.25 times as many as a 256×192 sensor. Subjects stay recognizable at greater distances, and the picture looks noticeably cleaner.
35 mm lens. A longer lens narrows the field of view and magnifies distant subjects. The f/1.0 aperture gathers a lot of infrared energy, which helps in cool, low-contrast conditions.
Display. A 1024×768 micro-OLED screen shows the thermal image with high contrast and fine detail in the eyepiece.
What you can use it for
- Long-range observation: scan open ground in total darkness.
- Bad weather: view through fog, rain and light smoke, where visible light fails.
- Recording: capture photos and video of what you see.
Who should look elsewhere
- You need to measure surface temperatures for inspections. See our handheld cameras.
- You want a lightweight handheld for casual use. A smaller monocular such as the CVLIFE BearMight is easier to carry.
How it compares
- GTGUARD AI15: a 256×192 sensor with AI enhancement, a 15 mm lens and 50 Hz.
- STELLAR T3 Mini: a much smaller 256×192 sight with a touchscreen.
Tips for better results
- Scan slowly and in sections. Dusk and pre-dawn give the best thermal contrast.
- Glass blocks thermal imaging, so you cannot view through a windshield or window.
- Fog and heavy rain shorten effective range.
- Never point it at the sun or another intense heat source, and clean the lens with a soft lens cloth.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a 35 mm lens matter?
A longer lens narrows the field of view and magnifies distant targets, so you see more detail at range.
How is 384×288 better than 256×192?
It has about 2.25 times as many thermal pixels, which gives a sharper, more detailed picture.
Are there local rules for thermal optics?
Regulations on thermal optics vary by location. Check the rules where you live before buying or using one.
What does IP67 mean?
The body is sealed against dust and can withstand temporary immersion in water.
Can it record video?
Yes. It captures photos and video.
