Product details

The FLIR C3-X is a pocket-size, rugged thermal camera from FLIR's entry-level C-series. It pairs a 128×96 thermal sensor with a 5 MP visible camera, FLIR's MSX edge-enhancement technology and a touchscreen, and it is aimed at electrical, mechanical and building troubleshooting.

At a glance

  • 128×96 thermal sensor with a 5 MP visible camera
  • MSX imaging overlays visible detail on the thermal image
  • -20°C to 300°C range
  • Touchscreen and LED flashlight
  • From a name inspectors and electricians recognize

Full specifications

  • Thermal resolution: 128×96 (12,288 pixels)
  • Visible camera: 5 MP
  • Thermal sensitivity (NETD): under 70 mK
  • Temperature range: -20°C to 300°C (-4°F to 572°F)
  • Accuracy: ±3°C from 0 to 100°C; ±3% from 100 to 300°C
  • Refresh rate: 9 Hz
  • Spatial resolution (IFOV): 7.9 mrad
  • Imaging: MSX multi-spectral dynamic imaging
  • Measurement tools: spot and box measurements with maximum and minimum
  • Other: touchscreen, LED flashlight

What the specs mean in practice

Resolution and spot size. 128×96 gives 12,288 thermal pixels. At 7.9 mrad each pixel covers about 8 mm at 1 m (80 mm at 10 m), so it suits larger targets such as panels, pipes and wall sections. For small components or distant targets, a higher-resolution camera is the better choice.

MSX. FLIR's MSX embosses edges from the visible camera onto the thermal image. Text, outlines and component shapes stay readable, which makes thermal pictures far easier to interpret and report.

Range. -20°C to 300°C covers building, plumbing, HVAC and most electrical and mechanical checks.

What you can use it for

  • Electrical: find overheating connections and imbalanced loads.
  • Mechanical: check motors, bearings and belts for abnormal heat.
  • Buildings: find leaks, missing insulation and blockages.
  • Home use: a trusted-brand tool at an entry-level resolution.

Who should look elsewhere

  • You need to see fine detail or measure small targets from a distance. 128×96 is entry-level resolution, and 256×192 models resolve far more.
  • You need temperatures above 300°C.

How it compares

Tips for better results

  • Scan electrical equipment under normal load and compare like with like.
  • Shiny bare metal reads cooler than it really is. Measure a patch of black electrical tape instead.
  • Glass blocks thermal imaging, so you see the glass surface and not what is behind it.
  • Use MSX to match a hot spot to the real component in the scene.

Frequently asked questions

What does MSX do?
It embosses edges from the visible-light camera onto the thermal image, so you can recognize objects and locate hot spots more easily.

Is 128×96 enough?
For finding overheating connections, leaks and blockages on typical equipment, yes. For small components or distant targets, a higher-resolution model is the better choice.

Why choose a FLIR over a cheaper camera?
You get FLIR's MSX imaging, rugged build and a well-known brand. Cheaper cameras often offer more raw resolution for the money.

What is the refresh rate?
9 Hz, which is fine for static inspection but slower to follow fast movement.

Does it have a visible camera?
Yes. A 5 MP visible camera works alongside the thermal sensor.
